My friend Connie and I took a walk along Nantasket Beach a couple of years back and began picking up stray plastic bags on the beach..we were shortly overwhelmed and inundated with soggy, sandy bags. Another walker spotted us and came over to say he was a retired marine biologist who walked the beach twice daily and picked up as he went. He was sickened by the amount of work he had taken on as part of his commune with nature. There are others among us - mostly retired people who walk regularly - who stop and pick up. Stop and Shop's parking lot is a plastic bag gold mine. I figure I will go to glory on some bumper I don't see coming as I stoop to pick up trash among the cars. I don't see any solution as we are already using recyclable shopping bags and it seems there are more bags out there than ever. I shall retreat to my little yard and feed the visiting little animals displaced by the continued very large footprint homes and condos in my area(Hingham).
